That didn’t happen this session. Each network came in first, second, and third at least once. One rerun here or there could have completely changed the final tallies.

The show, which was on the bubble for most of Session 10, managed to gain a renewal when early favorite 1930: Kings of the Street turned out to be a bust. The order is for four episodes. The entire cast from the first season is expected to return, with first season recurring guests Dianna Agron, Macy Gray, and Sara Ramirez all in contention for regular slots. If more then one of them are promoted, it is expected that first season director Baz Luhrmann would be demoted to directing on a recurring basis.

FBTV has canceled "The Rising", but is expected to keep most of the talent contracts for other shows next session.

“The Falling,” perhaps?

The above are the talent adjustments for Session 10 series that...

The above are the talent adjustments for Session 10 series that aired three or more episodes. So which of your favorite shows will return? Let’s take a look.

Like most R/C I. we took each network’s season average and divided it by its shows’ season average. This gives a better indication of how a series is preforming by the network’s standards rather than overall. Obviously, not all shows with a lower Index will be canceled, and not all shows with a high Index will return. A lot of factors go into the decision to renew a series; this list only provides the rating’s perspective.

FBTV

Tick, The - 1.07 (Final Season)

Horror City will return with more stand alone episodes, guest writers and a new cast. It might also be expanded to an hour.

Diary of a Super Powered Freak will return either with a short season or a TV movie.

The Hollywood Pit Presents…, The Waystation and Doctor Who are also expected to return.

Welcome to episode one of An HTG Archive Exclusive.

There’s often a lot of confusion surrounding how TV ratings work. As TV Admin, I thought that it would be prudent to explain it. Hopefully this will give new players a better understanding of how TV functions as well as provide a refresher to the older players.

First, let’s take a look at the weekly rating thread. Each week of TV I post the final ratings in the following format:

Week Number
Numbered list of every show ranked from highest to lowest
Numbered like of each network’s weekly average (not including syndication)
A snapshot of how the shows did in their specific timeslot

It’s a misnomer that the most important information is the list of shows. In reality, it is completely irrelevant. The only information on the list that is useful is the rating for shows longer than a half-hour since this is the average of all its timeslots.

At the end of the season, I post an Overall Average list which does hold some importance since it determines which shows receive a Regular TS Cap boost. Here is an excerpt from the Official HTG:TV Rules:

The #1 rated show for the session will get +5 Talent Score points to the regular cast.

#2 - #5 rated shows get +3.

#6-#10 rated shows get +2.

The rest of the top half of the shows get +1.

So while the your place on the weekly list is insignificant, it does act as a barometer for your Season Average.

The reason the list doesn’t really matter is simple: Shows in different timeslots are not competing with each other any more than shows on the same network are competing. Sure, it’s nice to see your show on top, but just because its not, doesn’t mean it’s not doing well.

What does matter is the snapshot as seen here:

Each show is battling the other shows in the same timeslot. The prize? A share of 25 rating points and $37.5 million. Add up the ratings for any three shows in a any non-syndication timeslot, and you’ll get 25 (or a little more/less if there was some rounding involved.)

Okay, that’s all well and good, but how are these numbers determined? Let’s break it down.

The above is where each show’s information goes into. The goal is to have more Show Points than your competitors.

Watch It Now - This is determined by how many people “vote” for your show. Each person can only vote for one show in each timeslot, and each vote is worth one show point. This is easily the most important number of the bunch as it’s the easiest to change from week to week. Of course “easy to change” could work it against you too. I’ve seen shows with low numbers everywhere else still win because of votes and vice versa. Moral of the story? Don’t forget to vote!

Buzz - is determined by the pre-session process where every one votes on a 1-10 scale based on how hyped they are for the show. The secret to good buzz? ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE. People pick up on producers who are enthusiastic about their work. Relying on your Network Executive to do it for you is only shooting yourself in the foot.

Your buzz score is turned into Show Points each week. Since it doesn’t change all season, it’s important to aim for a good score off the bat. Shows and TV Movies added late which don’t have buzz are at a huge disadvantage.

The buzz score can also be altered under certain conditions. Here is the info on that:

-If a show changes timeslots, it receives -0.25 Buzz.

-If a show does not air during a week, it receives -0.25 Buzz for each week it’s off the air before it returns.

-If, during upfronts, a show is scheduled to air during Week One but does not, it receives -0.50 Buzz when it does air.

-If, during upfronts, a show is scheduled to air at a certain time but does not, it receives -0.25 Buzz.

-This can culminate up to -1.00 Buzz.

-Every week the show remains consistent (i.e. stays in the same time slot and airs in consecutive weeks), it gets +0.25 Buzz until it reaches its original buzz score.

-Networks can avoid the -0.25 Buzz for weeks a series does not air by airing a rerun of that series in the correct time slot.

-Shows that air multiple episodes per week are not affected as long as one episode airs in the correct slot.

-All penalties are reset at the end of the season.

Just a -0.25 penalty affects very little, but it can add up.

Ad - This is currently a static number, and every show is equal. Next session there will be a new system in place.

Total Regular TS - New shows have a regular talent cap of 10. This can be increased by methods listed above or with award use. 10% of the total TS is added to the show points. Since this means a show with under a 10 cap gets less than one show point, it’s not a very efficient way to increase your rating. However, if your goal is to min/max your Show Points, getting as close to your cap as possible is the best bet.

Highest Guest - Only your highest guest is counted in the ratings, and if his/her TS is above 4, it is counted as 4. 20% of the TS is added to your show points, meaning you can add a max of 0.8 points. (If your show has no regulars, the cap is raised to 5 TS.)

Lead In - The show preceding yours has 20% of its total show points added to your show points. So being on after a popular show can be a big boost. (Shows an hour or longer have the same lead in across all its timeslots)

So what’s the formula?

Your total TS is determined by the following formula:

Watch It Now Votes + Buzz + Ad + 10% of Total Regular TS + 20% of Highest Guest TS + 20% of Proceeding Show’s Points = Total Show Points

And that’s it!

All three show’s points are added together. That number is divided by your total show points and then multiplied by 25. That’s your rating.

So as you can see, it’s not about having a lot of show points, it’s about having a big gap between you and your competitors. Three shows with equal show points will have equal ratings even if they have higher points than every other show on TV. Two strong shows competing with each other are actually lowering each other’s ratings. They might be the strongest shows on air, but it might not be apparent.

The top rated shows each week are almost always strong shows with weak competition.

YAK YAK YAK. OMG YOU ARE SO BORING. HOW DO I WIN THE GAME ALREADY?

Want the top rated show? Just follow these steps:

Get in a good timeslot. One where your competitors have low show points.

Make sure a lot of people vote for you.

Before the season, ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE to get a big buzz score.

Don’t miss a week or change timeslots.

Have a popular show as your lead in (and vote for it and give it high buzz).

Have a guest with over 4 TS each episode.

Make sure your Regular TS is as close to your cap as possible.

But in all seriousness, you should really just play the game how you want. If all you want is money, there are much easier ways to go about getting it (like reviewing.)

Make a good show that people want to read, and you will do just fine.

Behind the Numbers: Session 10, Week 3

We made a change to the rules that excludes the Syndication Hour from the network’s Overall Ratings. This is to give a more accurate report of how the network is doing in “Primetime.” It benefited the Flips the most, and in Week One they even went from second to first.

Below is the old overall for each network followed by the new rating and the amount changed.

Week One
FBTV - 6.42 > 8.63 (2.21)
DRTV - 6.57 > 8.43 (1.86)
RTV - 6.21 > 8.06 (1.85)

Week Two
RTV - 6.64 > 8.64 (2.00)
FBTV - 6.37 > 8.53 (2.16)
DRTV - 6.15 > 7.91 (1.76)

Week Three
FBTV - 6.56 > 8.82 (2.26)
DRTV - 6.51 > 8.39 (1.88)
RTV - 6.02 > 7.78 (1.76)

Across all three weeks, the ratings are such:

FBTV - 8.66

DRTV - 8.24

RTV - 8.16

Top shows that have aired at least one episode:

Dick Next Door, The - 9.16

Oregon Trail - 9.16

Tick, The - 9.10

Sheriff Pro Tempore - 8.78

TCW - 8.54

Wolfgang & Zombie - 8.47

Wise Tales - 8.26

Within the Lyrics - 7.43

Lunch Monster News Show, The - 7.38

Howling, The - 7.30

Blank - 7.12

1930: Kings of the Street… - 7.09

Downtown (S) - 3.69

Tick, The (S) - 0.92

Ritchie Steven Presents: “Horror Hour” (S) - 0.91

Badge of Justice (S) - 0.89

In the past I have only been able to provide the gross profit for shows and not the net profit. This session I started tracking both. The following is the top profit earners of the shows that have aired at least one episode:

Dick Next Door, The - $48,761,200

Wolfgang & Zombie - $13,641,000

Downtown (S) - $13,640,000

Lunch Monster News Show, The - $12,927,200

Sheriff Pro Tempore - $11,072,000

Casino Night - $9,658,600

Blank - $9,135,200

Desperate Screenwriters - $8,261,000

It’s Always Me - $3,922,000

Tick, The (S) - $3,325,000

Badge of Justice (S) - $2,605,000

1930: Kings of the Street… - $1,989,400

Ritchie Steven Presents: “Horror Hour” (S) - $1,910,000

Shenanigans (S) - $1,225,000

It’s Always Me (S) - $1,150,000

Zeppo, The (S) - (-$115,000)

Shadows (S) - (-$555,000)

First Class: Rejuvenation - (-$7,814,400)

Horror City - (-$9,385,100)

Remember that hour shows will always make more than half-hour shows since they are in more timeslots. To compare them, you should cut an hour show’s profit in half (or vice versa.)

Here are the gross profits for the networks:

DRTV - $114,918,920

FBTV - $85,102,600

RTV - $20,128,980

The show in question? 1930: Kings of the Street. The said decision came after the producer failed to hand in the season finale on time — it was this and the fact that it was poorly reviewed and lagged in the ratings that also factored into the show’s cancellation. The decision to cancel was a difficult one for Rogue Net owner Quantum who quipped that “There was a lot of humming and hawing about the show.” What does this mean for the Network’s future with show producer Jort? Apparently there is talks that the producer may develop a new show for Rogue Net starting next session but details about that show are mum for now. 1930: Kings of the Street starred James Marsden, Alan Dale, William Baldwin, Olivier Jackson-Cohen, and Meat Loaf. It was a spin-off from the Ship of Fooles film “1930”. Currently, there have been no talks with other networks to pick up the show for a second season.

Rogue Net has officially canceled The Lunch Monster News Show. Here’s a sneak peak:

RTV gained .43 points

FBTV dropped .05 points

In the syndication hour, FBTV & DRTV kept their line-up intact. After coming in last in the hour last week, Rogue switched things up. The network still came in last, however.

At 8:00, The Tick saw a big drop of .62 points, causing it to fall from first to second. Within the Lyrics saw an even bigger change, gaining .83 points to leap frog from last to first. Wolfgang and Zombie dropped to last after losing .21 points.

1930 gained an impressive 1.11 points at 8:30, yet still came in last place. DoaSPF took the top spot by a meager .04 points over It’s Always Me. Both shows dropped significantly over last week.

Skipping now to 10:00 where we have three one-hour shows competing. Each show maintained their rating over both timeslots. The Howling dropped .88 points, staying in last. TCW gained .37, staying in second. The Dick Next Door jumped .51 points.

In the community timeslot, Oregon Trail stayed in first but dropped .85 points. Casino Night remained stable, gaining .01 point. TLMNS gained .84 points to remain in last.

Overall Ratings:

Rogue - 6.43

FBTV - 6.40

DRTV - 6.36

As you can see, they are very close.

Top shows that have aired at least two episodes:

Blank - 6.72

In the past I have only been able to provide the gross profit for shows and not the net profit. This session I started tracking both. The following is the top profit earners of the shows that have aired at least two episodes:

Dick Next Door, The - $29,631,600

Of those, only nine were shows that were also buzzed on during Session 9 and/or 8. The following chart shows how these programs held up.

Green indicates the highest Buzz score across the last three sessions. Red is the lowest. Orange is the middle. Black indicates that the show wasn’t Buzzed that session.

Here’s a line graph with the same data:

The Shat is Back (UPDATE)

Citizens of Hollywood the Game have been seeing its ads crop up for a few weeks now; “the most expensive show in HTG history.” Casino Night. The show has also been pushing the fact that William Shatner is its host, but look closely and you will see that he is not a regular cast member on the show.

Bill Shatner’s Talent Score is a good 1.309 points above the 5 TS cap instilled on television series. There are awards out there that would remedy this, but they are hard to come by. So instead the show is going to use a great little loop hole: Shatner will be listed as a guest star (hence “guest host”.) This can work as long as the show airs less than five episodes, and only three are currently planned. This way the show will always have the “max” Guest TS thanks to Bill as well as a modest Regular TS thanks to some Playmates.

The show ran into some trouble early on. The Casino Night format works best when there are a good deal of people in chat. Those familiar with the HTG Chat know, high/low times can be seemingly random. The time and date for the taping of the first episode was announced last minute, and many people were unable to attend. The event was canceled at the last minute due to low turnout.

No date was set, and the first week of television loomed near. A poll was set up to determine when the best time for everyone would be, but it was inconclusive. On Thursday night at about 8:40 PM, show runner RS entered chat to find it full. The game was on. The cast and crew quickly arrived and, within an hour, the first episode was a wrap. Contestants were made to sign an NDA agreement so as not to spoil the show for those who did not attend.

Casino Night stands to be an interesting contender itself as it battles in the 11:00 slot starting Monday. New regulations force the last slot of the night to be a community-oriented show. That doesn’t mean the shows will be similar, however. FBTV has a game show for three weeks, and then a serious news show for the other three (The Hollywood Times, not Hollywood Pit Presents…, which is on hiatus.) Meanwhile Rogue Net is sporting its tongue-in-cheek animated news show, The Lunch Monster News Show. DRTV is backing Oregon Trail, a reality show. Who will come out on top? This will be one of the most interesting questions of the session.

UPDATE: Show runner, RS, mentioned in chat that they “over advertised” the first episode, leading me to believe each episode will have a different host.

Session 10 Preview Part 3: The Money

The following are some stats based on how much money the networks have spent to “tvbank”.

What TV Bank tracks:

Cast fees

Pilot fees

Revive fee (when a show goes to a new network or is picked up after being canceled)

Syndication rights

Fines

Production costs (genre fees, guest fees and ad budgets)

Since the season has not started yet, no production fees have been payed.

What TV Bank does not track:

Franchise buys

Set purchases

Advances to producers

Creative costs

I mention this because it may appear that a network has spent a good deal more or less than it actually has. There might also be some back room deals that aren’t tracked. For instanced, Quantum payed for the cost of the Sport of Kings cast. The show is currently in hiatus. The Dick Next Door is owned and payed for by DRTV despite airing on Rogue. Some of Rogue’s numbers were estimated since not all payments have been sent in yet.

These numbers are also subject to change at any moment as shows are added/removed to the lineup and casts change.

Total Spent by Each Network

This includes every dime spent to TV Bank so far.

RTV: $141,874,100

FBTV: $134,720,500

DRTV: $104,332,000

Total Spent on Unused Casts

This includes actors and directors assigned to a show that is on hiatus. All actors and directors not currently assigned to a show are considered “Under Contract” (aka Pay-or-Play). 50% of their normal contract is required, though sometimes the full 100% is payed.

FBTV: $25,795,500

RTV: $22,321,100

DRTV: $10,679,000

Total Spent on Pilot / Revive Fees

It cost new shows $5 mil to be created, and it cost the same amount when a show is canceled and then revived (TCW and First Class, for example.) Obviously networks with a brand new line-up (Rogue) will be paying more. TV Movies and Specials don’t have an up front fee.

I’ve added syndication here too. The price of those shows was 500k times the number of episodes submitted. It was an auction, so the prices may have gone up a bit.

RTV: $40,000,000

DRTV: $38,800,000

FBTV: $34,100,000

Total Spent on Casts

Finally we have the total amount spent on actors and directors. This includes the unused casts listed above.

FBTV: $100,620,500

RTV: $99,874,100

DRTV: $65,532,000

Dartcher is in talks to remake Friday the 13th, with the Flip Brothers releasing it for a planned release date of May 13th.

Oh, I get it.
First Class: Rejuvenation from Pedro (First Class: The Movie, Generations) is not a new show, but it is returning after being off air since session one. This makes is the longest time a show has been off air and then later revived.

FBTV

Horror City from PJFlip (Out of the Dark, The Battle Within) is about… well I couldn’t find a plot anywhere. I did find this tidbit though: “Originally planned as a theatrical release but changed into a TV series after being delayed for a long time.”
